Accessibility
1. Our approach and legal basis
LucyBalu aims to ensure that everyone – regardless of visual, hearing or motor impairments – can use our online shop without barriers. In doing so we follow the requirements of the German Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG), EU Directive 2019/882 and the technical standard EN 301 549.
We align our development work with the success criteria of WCAG 2.1, level AA, and work continuously on making our digital presence more accessible.
These guidelines are the worldwide benchmark for accessible web design and require content to be:
-
perceivable – information and elements must be accessible to all users
-
operable – navigation and controls must be accessible
-
understandable – both content and operating processes must be easy to follow
-
robust – content must work reliably with different technologies (e.g. screen readers)
We see accessibility not only as a legal obligation but as a moral responsibility. That is why we keep improving the accessibility of our shop and our content.
2. Current state of accessibility
- Structure & navigation: Our website has a logical structure. Main and footer navigation guide you clearly through our range. Content is structured with meaningful headings, paragraphs and lists.
- Keyboard operation: Many functions can already be used entirely with the keyboard.
- Colour contrast: Text, buttons and backgrounds meet a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1.
- Visual calm: We deliberately avoid blinking or flickering content. Animations are subtle and restrained.
- Media: Embedded videos start muted. There is no autoplay with sound.
- Alt text & language: Images have descriptive alt text. The language in the shop is clear, factual and easy to understand.
- Scalability: The website remains readable and usable at 200% zoom.
3. Planned improvements
An internal audit currently rates www.lucybalu.com as “partially conformant”. This means that some content already meets the requirements while other content still needs to be improved. As a small company with fewer than 10 employees, our resources are limited. Even so, we are committed to improving accessibility step by step.
Planned improvements:
-
Revising link text to make it easier to understand
-
Adding icons to error messages so that colour is not the only carrier of information
-
Reviewing and adjusting all ARIA roles
-
Converting assembly and safety instructions to accessible PDF/UA formats
-
Correcting individual heading structures to ensure a consistent semantic hierarchy
-
Adding missing alt text for images and graphics
