AirTag cat collar: wear it safely, fit it right
An AirTag on your cat's neck needs a collar that comes open in an emergency. NEMO in silicone and DORI in nylon have a breakaway buckle and a lightweight holder for the AirTag, and they fit necks from 20 to 31 cm (8 to 12 in). Here you'll learn what to look for and which collar suits your cat.

Why an AirTag cat collar needs a breakaway buckle
Outdoor cats climb, jump and squeeze through hedges. If the collar gets caught somewhere, the buckle opens and your cat gets free. A collar without this kind of buckle doesn't belong on a cat that goes outside.
The downside: when the buckle opens, the collar and the AirTag stay behind. At least the AirTag then shows you where it happened.
NEMO or DORI: which AirTag cat collar is right for your cat?
Both hold the AirTag securely and have the same buckle. The difference is the material. NEMO is soft and hugs the neck, DORI is sturdier and stands up well to claws.
How to put on an AirTag cat collar correctly
AirTag or GPS tracker?
An AirTag is light, needs no subscription and runs for about a year on a coin cell battery. But it only shows you the last location reported by a nearby Apple device. What makes a good AirTag cat collar?
Look for a breakaway buckle that opens under pull, a lightweight strap and a holder that keeps the AirTag firmly in place. NEMO and DORI both check those boxes. NEMO is made of soft silicone, DORI of tear-resistant nylon.
How much does my cat need to weigh to wear an AirTag cat collar?
We recommend NEMO and DORI for adult cats weighing at least 3 kg (6.6 lb). Together, the collar and AirTag weigh a little over 20 g (0.7 oz).
Are collars dangerous for cats?
A collar without a breakaway buckle can be dangerous if your cat gets caught on something. A breakaway buckle opens in that case. Adjust the fit so two fingers fit underneath, and check it regularly.
Collar or harness for the AirTag?
For outdoor cats, we recommend a breakaway collar. A harness won't come open if your cat gets caught.
Is the AirTag waterproof?
Apple rates the AirTag IP67, so it can handle rain and brief submersion. NEMO, made of silicone, is waterproof too.
Is the AirTag included?
No. You get the collar with the holder; you buy the AirTag separately.
How long does the AirTag battery last?
About a year. It's a CR2032 coin cell battery that you can replace yourself. Your iPhone lets you know when it's running low.
Does the 2nd-generation AirTag fit NEMO and DORI?
Yes. The 2nd-generation AirTag is the same size as the first one and fits just as securely in the NEMO and DORI holders.
