Large stainless steel litter box or one with a high rim

Large stainless steel litter box or one with a high rim

A litter box should be big enough for your cat to turn around and dig in peace. That is why LucyBalu litter boxes are roomy and open, with no hood. Both stand on non-slip feet and are simple enough in design that they look fine in the bathroom, the hallway or the living room.

Stainless steel litter box

The STEELOO litter box has a stainless steel tray (AISI 201) and measures 59.5 × 39.5 × 15.5 cm (23.4 × 15.6 × 6.1 in). The smooth, non-porous surface of the tray does not absorb urine odor and rinses clean in a few minutes. STEELOO comes in bare stainless steel or with a powder-coated exterior in white, steel gray, greige and black. You can read more about the material on our page Stainless steel cat litter box.

Litter box with a high rim

The ARENA litter box is 66 cm wide, 46 cm deep and 24 cm high (26 × 18 × 9.4 in). It has a low entry and an extra-high rim that keeps litter inside the box and also helps with cats that pee standing up. You can take the rim off for cleaning, and at 2.2 kg (4.9 lb) ARENA is easy to carry to the bathroom.

Large cats like Maine Coons or Norwegian Forest Cats need an open litter box that is about one and a half times as long as the cat without its tail. The STEELOO litter box is 59.5 cm long and 39.5 cm wide (23.4 × 15.6 in), and the ARENA measures 66 × 46 cm (26 × 18 in). Even a large cat can turn and dig in both, and both stand on non-slip feet when the digging gets serious.

Many cats prefer an open litter box because they can keep an eye on the room and odors do not build up under a hood. A covered box holds back more litter and hides what is inside. Both LucyBalu litter boxes are open. To keep litter off the floor, the ARENA has a high rim, and the LOOMAT litter mat fits in front of either model.

Stainless steel is smooth and non-porous. That is why the tray of the STEELOO litter box does not absorb urine odor and can be thoroughly washed and disinfected. It is made of AISI 201 stainless steel and measures 59.5 × 39.5 × 15.5 cm (23.4 × 15.6 × 6.1 in). What lab studies show about stainless steel compared with plastic, and how to care for the tray, is on our page Stainless steel cat litter box.

Cats that pee standing up need a litter box with a high rim. The ARENA litter box is 24 cm (9.4 in) high and has an extra-high rim, yet a low entry. That way the urine ends up in the box and not on the wall behind it. At 15.5 cm (6.1 in), the STEELOO is lower and better suited to cats that squat to pee.

Scoop clumps and poop every day, or twice a day if you have several cats. Replace all of the litter regularly and wash out the tray while you are at it. How often that is needed depends on the litter and the number of cats. Our magazine article How often to change cat litter gives you a guide.

The common rule is one litter box per cat plus one extra. For two cats, that means three litter boxes. Put them in different quiet spots so no cat has to cross paths with another to get there. The STEELOO and the ARENA work well together, for example.

A litter mat right in front of the litter box keeps litter from spreading around the house. The LOOMAT litter mat measures 60 × 40 cm (23.6 × 15.7 in), has two layers and traps the granules in its honeycomb structure. A litter box with a high rim like the ARENA and a litter that barely sticks to paws, such as TOFU cat litter, help too.

How to keep the area around the litter box clean

How to keep the area around the litter box clean

How clean the floor around the litter box stays depends mostly on the litter and on what lies in front of the box. TOFU cat litter clumps reliably, creates little dust and hardly sticks to paws.

Whatever still gets carried out on the paws is caught by the LOOMAT litter mat. It measures 60 × 40 cm (23.6 × 15.7 in), has two layers and traps the granules in its honeycomb structure. The mat is waterproof, so you just shake it out or rinse it off.
