The Prettiest Alternatives – Non-Toxic Houseplants with a WOW Effect

Have you tried everything, but your kittens are still simply fascinated by anything green? Then we at LucyBalu recommend switching to non-toxic plants. There are plenty of alternatives that can add a real wow effect to any room.

Absolute eye-catchers that suit any stylish home include, for example, ferns. Many different types of ferns enrich our four walls in surprising ways and look great too. Agave, date palm, alocasia, or finger aralia are non-toxic and therefore ideal for cat households. What's more, they offer something for every shade of green. Of course, you can also follow the latest bohemian trend and decorate with dried grasses and ferns.

Also safe for cats are spider plants, coffee plants or the pinwheel plant – also known as the UFO plant. The prayer plant, which is currently making a spectacular comeback as THE houseplant, can also be potted with a clear conscience. And if that's not enough, you'll find impressive plants like the jade plant.

Beautiful flowering plants like lavender, roses, or camellias also make wonderfully colorful and fragrant accents.

And what if we want to grow our own herbs?

No problem there either – common herbs like dill, basil, mint or even parsley are completely harmless. And if you'd like to follow the example of our vet Sandra, you can grow strawberries at home – her cat Monaco simply finds these fruits fascinating and happily takes a trusting bite every now and then.

By the way – cat grass shouldn't be missing from any indoor cat household. After all, no cat should be denied this instinctive way of cleansing from the inside. And if your cat always has something tasty to nibble on, who knows whether the other plants will still be all that interesting to them.

And what if it happens anyway?

Despite all our good intentions, it can happen that we've unknowingly bought a plant that our cat then eagerly nibbles on. Do we need to panic? Not at first. Unless you've actually seen your cat eat whole leaves of a poinsettia, the best thing to do is stay calm and keep an eye on your cat. However, if signs of poisoning appear, quick action is needed. In that case, head straight to the vet! Signs of acute poisoning include repeated vomiting, diarrhea, foaming at the mouth, changed pupils, pain, or also lethargy and unusual withdrawal.

If you notice such signs as an owner, or if your pet is behaving unusually, you should react immediately. In case of severe symptoms, we recommend driving straight to a nearby veterinary clinic. If there's time, take a photo of the plant your cat has been nibbling on – this makes the vet's job enormously easier.
