Starnberg Animal Shelter – A Donation Success with LucyBalu
LucyBalu equips Starnberg Animal Shelter with new cat furniture – VAT campaign becomes a full donation success!
In early summer 2020, the German federal government passed a temporary VAT reduction lasting until the end of the year. LucyBalu's founders decided to take an unusual approach. At checkout, they gave customers a choice – receive a 3% "Corona discount" directly at the till, or donate that amount to a good cause. Almost all customers chose to donate. One of the two founders, Dr. Mathias Wahrenberger, is delighted with this response: “Lots of small amounts add up to a big impact. Our customers made a conscious choice to do good by giving up their VAT discount. We're absolutely thrilled about that!”

It was only in the summer of 2019 that the young Munich-based company launched. Strictly speaking, LucyBalu – which today produces stylish, sustainably made cat furniture – was born at Munich Animal Shelter. As part of a pro bono project, founder and product designer Sebastian Frank developed timeless loungers, climbing steps, and hammocks to improve cats' living conditions in confined spaces. At the same time, the understated cat furniture was designed to enhance the living spaces of their owners.
The total amount raised – several thousand euros – was donated last week to the Starnberg Animal Shelter. Why choose an animal shelter in wealthy Starnberg, of all places? Although the town south of Munich is itself considered quite affluent, the shelter, like many others, is chronically underfunded. The Tierschutzverein-Starnberg e.V. (Starnberg Animal Welfare Association) finances itself almost entirely through donations and membership fees. It was important to ensure that the cats at the shelter would benefit directly from the money donated by LucyBalu's customers. That's why two entire cat rooms were fitted out with new furniture – including the SWING hammock, which is also a favourite napping spot for Choupette, Karl Lagerfeld's cat. The two managing directors, who are passionate about animal welfare in their private lives too, personally delivered and assembled the cat furniture. Both the staff at Starnberg Animal Shelter and the two founders from Munich were thoroughly delighted with the outcome of this successful campaign. Tanja Wieber, deputy shelter manager, is thrilled with the result: “It looks absolutely amazing! We're proud to now have two such stylish cat rooms. This will definitely help us find new homes for our cats even faster.”

Building on this success, LucyBalu is committed to helping more animal shelters in the future. Founder Sebastian Frank is confident about this: “With our success, we want to support many more animal shelters across Germany. Once a shelter, always a shelter!”.
