The Great Classics – Cats as Secret Stars

Cats rarely play the leading role in movies – yet they steal the show again and again. They often show up almost incidentally, yet stay all the more memorable. Hollywood realized early on: a cat in the frame adds character, depth, and sometimes chaos.

One of the best-known classics is Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), in which Holly Golightly has a nameless red cat that's just as independent as she is. Equally legendary: The Godfather (1972) – the cat on Marlon Brando's lap, incidentally, wasn't planned at all but a spontaneous encounter on set. The result: iconic.

Disney also recognized early how popular cats are. The Aristocats (1970) is all about a cat family. Pinocchio (1940) gave us Figaro, probably the cutest supporting character in film history. Later came classics like Alice in Wonderland (1951) with the grinning Cheshire Cat, or Lady and the Tramp (1955) with the sassy Si and Am.

Cult, Comedy & Chaos – Cats with Personality

From the '80s and '90s onward, cats in movies increasingly became real characters – with attitude, humor, and sometimes a slightly criminal streak. Best example: Jonesy from Alien (1979). The cat survives the monster, outer space, and pretty much everything else – and became a cult figure.

No less iconic is Mr. Bigglesworth from the Austin Powers films, whose hairless presence is almost creepier than the villain himself. Or Salem from Sabrina, the Teenage Witch (a TV series, sure, but pure pop culture).

In comedies, cats often show up as an ironic contrast:

In recent years, cats have even managed to land real leading roles. First and foremost Keanu, but international productions have also deliberately cast cats as sympathetic leads.

And then, of course, the controversial but much-discussed film Cats (2019) – in which cats do play the lead role, but have less fur than CGI.

In A Man Called Otto (starring Tom Hanks, from 2022), a cat plays a quiet but meaningful role. The velvet paw doesn't show up as a gag, but as an emotional catalyst: it cracks Otto's tough shell and stands for closeness, responsibility, and a fresh start. Typically cat-like – no big drama, no grand gestures, but there at exactly the right moment. The film beautifully shows how cats in the movies often don't need to be the center of attention to decisively shape a story.

What all these films have in common: cats bring authenticity. They don't act – they are. Maybe that's why they seem so believable on screen. Or as they say in Hollywood:

“Never work with animals or children” – except, of course, with cats.
